When it came to Americans and Mexicans during the Mexican War, Maria Augustus de la Guerra Ord was on the side of justice. Her brothers had been treated unfairly and held as prisoners without just reason. Mary was curious to see if she could do something to keep what the Americans wanted out of their reach. This text that not exactly reveal that she was fearful, but I would guess that she was afraid for her child and for Chavez being caught by the Americans. She conceals her fear very well, but confidently answering questions from the Leutenant. It seems that she was not afraid at all for her freedom.

The source of Mary's strenght comes from the unjust imprisonment of her two brothers. She mentions that she didn't help Chavez because of his nationality but because Americans were trying to do him wrong. She sacrifices her safety to prove a point she strongly believes in. The absence of men enables Mary to become the man of the house. She becomes protective of her home and her family. She prohibits and the Leutenant from staying in her room that night. Also, she finds that she can make her own decision about what she firmly believes.
